Radical Orchidectomy

What is “Radical Orchidectomy”?

Removal of a testicle with the spermatic cord through an incision in the groin

Why do I need this?

  • To remove a testicular tumour, and determine if a cancer is present and its extent
  • Further treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be needed later

How long does it take?

30 minutes under a general anaesthetic

What are the risks?

  • Wound infection – antibiotics are given
  • Haematoma, or blood collection in the scrotum
  • Numbness of inner thigh or scrotum

What can I expect after surgery?

  • This can be performed as day surgery, or an overnight stay
  • Your wound is held together by a dissolvable stitch under the skin
  • Avoid heavy lifting and physical exertion for 4 weeks
  • Bruising and swelling should settle within 1 – 2 weeks

You will be given a post-op review appointment about 3 weeks following surgery
