What is “Radical Orchidectomy”?
Removal of a testicle with the spermatic cord through an incision in the groin
Why do I need this?
- To remove a testicular tumour, and determine if a cancer is present and its extent
- Further treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be needed later
How long does it take?
30 minutes under a general anaesthetic
What are the risks?
- Wound infection – antibiotics are given
- Haematoma, or blood collection in the scrotum
- Numbness of inner thigh or scrotum
What can I expect after surgery?
- This can be performed as day surgery, or an overnight stay
- Your wound is held together by a dissolvable stitch under the skin
- Avoid heavy lifting and physical exertion for 4 weeks
- Bruising and swelling should settle within 1 – 2 weeks
You will be given a post-op review appointment about 3 weeks following surgery
