Penile Plication

What is penile plication?

This procedure corrects angulation in the erect penis

Why do I need this?

  • Curvature of the penis can be congenital or acquired
  • It creates a bend in the erect penis that makes intercourse and penetration difficult because of pain or buckling or physical limitations

How long does it take?

60 – 90 minutes under a general anaesthetic

What are the risks?

  • Foreskin complications can occur so circumcision is often advised
  • Wound infections may occur
  • The skin incision often looks red with crusting and the dissolving sutures may take 10-20 days to fall out
  • Penile shortening of about 1cm may occur
  • About 10% of cases can recur
  • Loss of sensitivity is possible depending on the type of curvature and repair
  • Thrombosis is uncommon

What can I expect after surgery?

  • An overnight stay in hospital is normal
  • A catheter is inserted overnight because of a compressive dressing to minimise bleeding
  • Bruising and tenderness in the penis requires 6 weeks abstinence from intercourse
  • Some discomfort with erections may occur in the first 4 weeks
  • One week off work is usually adequate
